It has always been difficult to explain the importance of the IT department. Some executives see this the department as "the one that constantly spends and doesn't make a profit". One of the reasons for this is the difficulty in showing the value of having a competent IT staff and quality software and hardware and measuring the output of this department.

Microsoft is developing a tool, now in Beta cycle, which lets you determine whether the IT department achieves its goals. This will help IT managers decide where to invest money and create nice reports and charts for management to see how effective it is and when asking for further purchases, explain why they are needed.
It works with both Exchange 2000 and 2003 and requires SQL and SQL reporting services.
