It will be based on the current Jet engine which will be improved to allow for continuous backup and better search capabilities. This means the Microsoft is dropping for now its plans on basing Exchange on a version of SQL 2005, but will try to pack in some improvements that such a move was supposed to bring. This might probably means that Active Directory will also remain a Jet based engine, and a unified database for Microsoft server based application will not be available at least until 2010.
E-12 will be able to publish itself as a web service using WSDL; offer improved scripting and security; and more e-mail/voice-mail/fax integration, according to company officials. The new release also will add better support for mobile devices, improved Outlook Web Access functionality; and better integrated meeting-scheduling capabilities, now only provided using third-party products.
