1. Exchange 2010 Online Archive Client Support

Welcome to the January 2011 edition of the MSE Newsletter! I hope all of you had a great holiday. This month I want to talk about which Exchange clients currently support the Exchange 2010 Online Archive. That is, from which clients the archive is visible and accessible.

Outlook Web App 2010

As long as you run Exchange 2010 RTM or later, you can access the online archive via Outlook Web App 2010 (OWA 2010).

Outlook 2010

Outlook 2010 RTM and later has full support for the online archive.

Outlook 2007

Just like Outlook 2010 you can access the online archive via Outlook 2007. It’s important to note though that you must be running Outlook 2007 SP2 with Office 2007 Cumulative Update for December 2010 or later.

Outlook 2003

You cannot access the online archive from this version and Microsoft will not provide an update.

What about Outlook 2011 for Mac (Entourage)?

Outlook 2011 for Mac (formerly known as Entourage) and previous versions of the Mac client do not include support for accessing the online archive mailbox. However the Mac Business group is looking at supporting this with a future update but there's no confirmation or time line though.

What about Exchange ActiveSync Devices?

None of the devices supporting the Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) protocol have support for accessing the online archive mailbox yet. This includes Windows Phone 7 and iPhone 4 based devices.

Until later,
Henrik Walther

6. Ask Henrik Walther a question

QUESTION:

I want to learn more about how to load balance Exchange 2010 Hub and Edge Transport servers. Also, is it possible to load balance them using Windows NLB or a hardware load balancer?

ANSWER:

So, all the way back since Exchange 2007 SP1, load balancing both Hub and Edge Transport servers using Windows NLB or hardware based solution was supported. Back when Exchange 2007 SP1 was released, I even wrote this article, which explains how you load balance a set of Exchange 2007 Hub Transport servers using Windows NLB.

Up until now this specific topic was missing from the Exchange documentation on TechNet. Alright the Exchange 2007 documentation contained 4-5 lines that briefly mentioned that it was supported but step by step instructions on how to actually do it were missing.

As a Microsoft vendor one of the things I do is to help write some of the more advanced topics that the Exchange User Education team wants to include in the Exchange 2010 TechNet documentation. My last assignment was to get some documentation written about how to properly load balance Hub and Edge Transport servers. A few weeks ago this content was finally published:

After going through the "old" Exchange 2007 article here on MSExchange.org and the above TechNet links you should get a good understanding on how to approach this.
